learning martial arts from DVDs?

Postby king.ferdinando » Sat Jul 02, 2011 10:31 am

I know you see the cheesy guys like the karate dude from Napoleon Dynamite.
but I had given up my boxing training as I didn't have a spare 120 $ every month for mediocre training.
I was wondering if you guys think it's possible to get quality martial arts training from DVDs which are cheaper.
They're playing groupies so I'm playing rockstar- Mystery

you CAN, if you have friends who you can train with, that you practice the stuff from it

use to do that with Sayoc, but then we would have a seminar ever few months where one of the high ranking guys would come to Az and polish everything up and teach us more

that is how training groups got started, until guys move up in rank for it to be legit

also pretty sure Evan Tanner said he learned BJJ from DVDs (or maybe RIch)

It's possible, but you're in Cali dude - there are good gyms near you, and if you really want to train, go to a good gym.

Its like learning pick-up from DVD's versus going out into the field with guys who are much better than you.

I agree with Bravo, it's not practical if you have no one to train with.

Just like anything in life, you learn more from doing than watching, reading or writing. It doesnt mean you can't benefit from watching from someone who has skill. It means in order to learn to block a right cross and counter with a hammer fist to the nose you need to be able practice it real life to understand the timing, the angles and how to improvise if it doesnt go as planned.

It's kinda like watching porn. You can get some ideas on what to do but you have to bang chicks to get good at it.

GO TO A GYM! Seriously unless your freind is an experienced teacher with mats in his garage your just fucking around with your buddies. I have seen tons of guys try this in MMA and it dosent work. find a better place to train. You can usually get a free lesson or trial.

It's hard to learn of DVDs because sometimes you could be doing little things wrong like having your foot in the wrong place and not even noticing it so it's really helpful to have some one more experienced with you pointing out your mistakes.

Yes you can. And really given the utter crap that gets propagated in 99% of dojos, your probably getting at least equivalent if not better training for you buck. The caveat to this, and the place most dojos fail as well, is that you absolutely MUST have a partner as dedicated as you and will to spare/drill on just about a daily occurrence. They must be fit and able to present enough aggression that will actually push you in your training. This is the downfall of most schools.
