disaster plan for your house

been thinking more and more about how to prepare to emergency situations and what I would do when the big fan goes to shit

farmer and bravo's post about the guy who was eating the face off another guy and the zombie apocalypse coming also helped trigger me to think about it more and more - What would you do in a disaster?

Realized that my emergency plan only consists of: some canned food, a flashlight and a baseball bat, and hiking shoes and a winter jacket.

In case I need to hold out, I need to buy more food and water. Also a rope ladder to go over my balcony in case I need to bug out the back.

So I will be getting two durable bug out bags (1 hiking bag to go on my back and 1 duffel bag):

in the bags, I will have:

canned food
can opener
two 1L waterbottles
granola bars
lighters
swiss army knife
pot
propane powered portable hotplate
flashlight
clothes
go money
passport
advil

and i carry with me, wallet, cell phone, and keys.

In case I need to bug out, My first plan will be to go to my car and drive away. If I cannot get to my car, then I will have to walk somewhere which I would have to consider whether it's best staying at home.

Do any of you think about this stuff and have a disaster plan? I think my plan is pretty basic but this is an area I feel I should be paying more attention to.

My Aunt's house burned down recently and they lost everything because they had no plan. (Even lost her dentures!) So I think having all those things in a bag in your car would be a good idea, and another bag in your house somewhere.

I'd skip the propane powered hot plate though...could become hard to get more propane. Sterno is cheaper and safer. It will also store better.

damn - sorry to hear about that Jay-T - hope everyone is OK and well (given the situation)

thanks for letting me know about the sterno - haven't heard about that before. there's a also a woodfire one so we don't have to rely on gas powered.

looks pretty legit

There's a show on National Geographic channel called Doomsday Preppers, but it's about people who are prepping for doomsday. They take it way too far most of the time, but some of the principles are solid.
